Miniatures Finished: Dinoborgs of the world, unite!

Given I was so close to getting all my Bot War stuff done, I just pushed through. I'm also trying to get a Learn to Play night going at work, but that's had to be rescheduled a few times, so these are kind of just done for the sake of it. Much as the Bot War miniatures are really nice, I have gone with some 3D prints here for some of the range that isn't as nice, or just didn't fit with what I was going for.

The mighty Dinoborgs of the Red Star Nations march to war!

The Brontoborg is a transport and mobile fortress, the model has been modified with some Battlefield Accessories ruins and some 3D printed dinosaur infantry to replace the cyborg humans of the official range.

Tricera-Borg is one of the strongest models in the army currently, fast and deadly with some of the best attacks Red Star have access to.

The Raptorborgs are a little disappointing as models, but new ones should be out pretty soon. The design is nice, but they're oddly thin and flat looking.

Miniatures Finished: Comrade Dinosaurs

I have been slowly expanding my collection of Bot War miniatures, focusing mainly on my Red Star dinoborgs, because who doesn't love communist dinosaurs? I'm yet to really crack winning with them on the table, but one of my regular Bot War opponents is pretty cutthroat, so maybe it's not all me?

Glorious revolutionary dinosaurs march forth to expand the Warsaw Pact!

Pacheoborgs, hard-headed and tough, but sadly not great in the game. From Trader's Galaxy, of course, but with machine guns from an Osprey sprue.

TREX and the Stegoborg are the backbones of the force, though Rex is a little slow, it is a new army and I have more to figure out.

Miniatures Finished: Bot War Infestor Queen

I think this model was sitting on my painting table for around six months, which is pretty rare for me, as I tend to paint quickly, but I just kind of got bored with it when it looked like I wouldn't get to play much Bot War anytime soon.

The mighty Infestor Queen! She's scaled for the 8mm Bot War stuff, but I've placed a Heroclix figure next to her so you can get an idea of just how big she is!

The whole model only features around 8 paint colours on her, mostly washes, but I'm really happy with how she turned out!

With the Queen done, I've now painted every model in the Infestors faction, so I'm looking at some Red Star or maybe Overlords so that I can demo games for people.

I changed the scythe she had to something less comically large, this part is from a Dark Eldar Talos.

Miniatures Finished: Infestor Swarms

Part of the Infestors army for Bot War are these "Swarms", mechanical wasp-like creatures that move quickly and harry enemies. I ordered two sets with my initial order of Bots, not realising that up to three Swarms could be fielded in the one army. So rather than have two bases of three bugs on flying stands, I made three bases of two bugs scavenging on rocks.

I've never been a big fan of the GW-style plastic flying stands, so many of my "flying" units are propped up by wire or standing on something. I really wasn't happy with these models, but now that they're done, I kind of like them and want to get a game in.

Miniatures Finished: Infestors

Finished my first lot of miniatures for Bot War, an exciting, Australian-made miniatures game put out by Trader's Galaxy. My chosen faction are the Infestors, alien robots that have lost their individuality and been subsumed into the swarm.

Locust, Roach and Mantis.

Beetle, Termite and Weevil

Despite being a garage operation, the miniatures are crisp, with plenty of detail to work with. I used a Tamyia Aluminum basecoat and GW Contrast paints to make them look like the gaudy, Gen-2 Transformers I remembered from the 1990s.

Crystal Caverns - Bot War AAR

Though I'm yet to get too into it here, Bot War is an exciting Indy miniatures game produced in Australia by Trader's Galaxy. The game has a strong '80s Nostalgia Vibe with obvious influence from Transformers, but to stop there would be selling Bot War short, as there are also strong elements of Marvel Comics, GI Joe and even Knight Rider making up the wonderfully vibrant setting and range of miniatures. The minis themselves are also very nice, crisply cast in whitemetal with a decent heft not seen much these days. The rules are simple, but with enough depth that each army uses different strategies and nothing dominates too badly. Naturally, I'm planning to mix my Bot War stuff in with various superhero and Kaiju games already, but that's not to say I won't be playing games in the existing setting as well. To whit;

On the distant and ruinous planet Syberkron, bands of rouge bots and aliens scavenge for the precious energy crystals they need to survive and power their weapons and technology. Forming naturally around such sources as leaky reactors and old capacitors, energy crystals are well worth fighting and dying for, especially when the other guy's doing the dying. The lowest scum of the galaxy, the loathsome Overlord Gorg and his minions, and the insidious Infestors, Bots who have fallen to their basest desires and turned savage, found themselves in the same rusted section of Syberkron, after the same crystals.

My opponent, Justin, points out my unfinished Infestors. I did have both Termite and Weevil finished, but Weevil broke in transit. Justin borrowed some of my fantasy figures to proxy the Overlords troops.
Termite's "Advanced Deployment" special rule lets him start on one of the crystal objectives and count victory points before the game begins.

Overlord Gorg moves up to harvest his own energy crystals whilst directing his Sharkmen minions forward.

Fire is exchanged as both sides close quickly, but damage is piecemeal.

Using their Air Support ability, the Infestors move up quickly, but find themselves overwhelmed by the brutal Sharkmen.

Weevil is the first to be taken out of the fight, as I discover that the Infestors are build more for mobility and firepower than close combat.

Wanting to see how his Combat Scimitars fare, Mantis charges into the nearest Sharkman, but fails to connect when it counts.

Beetle tries to lay down some covering fire, but in Bot War, shooting is far less brutal than close assault.

As the Sharkmen close in, things look bleak for the Infestors.

As Beetle falls, the victory points swing in the Overlords' favour.

Despite his massive frame and extra limbs, Termite turns out to not be much chop in hand to hand combat, but some lucky rolling helps him even the score a little.

The small victory is short-lived, however, as Gorg closes in and finishes off the last Infestor before half of the turn limit has passed.
As always with learning games, I picked up a lot from this first game of Bot War, like my army being more built for mobility and shooting than close combat and the Overlords have some great synergy out of the box, but that didn't stop it being a hell of a lot of fun. The game is very fast, with even 8 "hits" characters being taken out in one blow with the right roll of the dice. I'm not usually a fan of custom dice for a game, but the Bot War set is both affordable and well presented, with enough dice and energy cubes for two players in most circumstances. The resource management of the cubes makes the game a little deeper where it needs to be and is making me look forward to bigger games and more complex scenarios.
